The New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 9-5 on Sunday afternoon at CitiField. A game that looked like a blowout early on turned into a bullpen mess that the Mets salvaged in the end. Niese’s strong outing earned him his fourth victory of the season while the Mets offense exploded for 17 hits.

You have all the reason to smile, Jose.

The New York Mets were defeated by the Chicago Cubs 11-1 on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. Terrible efforts from the defense and bullpen really put the Mets at a disadvantage all game. Jonathon Niese suffered his fifth loss of the season as the Mets fall to 22-25 on the season.

After a game like this, I can only imagine what Freddy Wilpon is going to say next...

The Mets hit 3 home runs and scored all of their 6 runs in the final 3 innings to propel them past the Houston Astros.  They improved their record to 18-20 with the win.

Mets starter Dillon Gee was shaky, allowing 4 runs in his 5+ innings of work.  It could have been a lot worse, as Carlos Lee and Bill Hall were thrown out at the plate in the 2nd and 6th innings, respectively.  Hall’s play was a turning point in the game — the Astros were leading 4-0 with runners on second and third and looking like they were cruising to a blowout.  But Daniel Murphy made a nice backhanded snag on Michael Bourne’s groundball, got the out at first, and then threw Hall out at the plate.

Aubrey Huff hit a go-ahead home run in the 10th inning off Taylor Buchholz to lead the Giants to victory over the Mets.  This came after a bases-loaded opportunity in the bottom of the 9th for the Mets in which Josh Thole grounded into a double play to end the inning.  The loss drops the Mets to 12-17.

This was a back-and-forth game that saw both starting pitchers get knocked around early on.  Four batters into the home half of the 1st, the Mets provided starter R.A. Dickey a quick 3-0 lead, thanks to Carlos Beltran’s 3-run line shot over the right field wall.  But the Giants struck back in the 3rd inning, scoring 4 runs and grabbing the lead, with starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong singling in the first run of that rally (What is with Dickey giving up RBI hits to the opposing pitcher this year?).

John Mayberry homered to lead off the 7th inning, and Placido Polanco hit a tie-breaking sac fly later in the inning to give Roy Halladay and the Phillies the win over the Mets.  The Mets have now lost 3 in a row and drop to 11-16 on the year.

This was a classic pitcher’s duel between the established ace Halladay and the young Jon Niese.  The Mets got to Halladay first, plating the first run on Carlos Beltran’s RBI single to drive in Daniel Murphy in the 4th.  They threatened to score more in that inning, but Halladay buckled down and retired the next 3 batters with 2 on.  Niese made the 1-0 lead stand up until he ran out of gas in the 7th inning.
