The Phils wrapped this game up early — after 4 innings, it was 9-0.  Hunter Pence drove in 3 of those runs, including a 2-run homer in the first that got the ball rolling.  For the 13th time this season, Mike Pelfrey took the loss.  He was only able to stick around for the first 3 innings, allowing 5 runs.  Fittingly (assuming this is his last appearance of the season, and let’s hope it is), D.J. Carrasco got shelled as well – the final 4 Philly runs came in his 1 inning of work.  He likely won’t be around next year; Pelfrey probably will.  Roy Halladay himself had a typical game, tossing 6 shutout innings for the win.

The New York Mets took both games of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. R.A. Dickey pitched Game One and had a no-hitter heading into the seventh inning. David Wright hit a tie-breaking double in the eighth inning to lead the Mets to a 2-1 victory. Dillon Gee took the mound in Game Two and pitched six strong innings allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out two. The Mets put up five runs in the third inning, paving the way to a 6-3 win in the night cap. They have now won three in a row as they look to finish the season strong.

The New York Mets were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals 11-6 on Tuesday night. Mike Pelfrey pitched six innings, allowing five runs on ten hits and no walks while striking out two. The Mets had a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the bullpen let up six runs all with two outs. With the loss, they fall to 73-81 on the season and have sole possession of fourth place in the National League East division.

Pelf had a better night at the plate than on the mound.

The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Braves in a 7-5 win on Sunday afternoon. Dillon Gee gave up the first run of the game in the third inning on a Chipper Jones (no surprise there) double. However, the Mets bats took charge in the fourth inning putting up a four spot. Gee quickly gave away the lead when he allowed three more runs to cross in the bottom of the inning. His final line was 4 1/3 innings yielding four runs on eight hits and five walks along with four strikeouts. With the game tied in the seventh, Freddie Freeman put the Braves up a run with an RBI single. The Mets responded again with two runs in their following turn at bat for a 6-5 lead. Bobby Parnell bridged the lead to Manny Acosta, who recorded his second save of the season en route to a series win against the Braves. 

Ruben Tejada deserves the game ball for his performance today at the plate.

The Nats beat the Mets for the third straight game, as David Wright‘s third-inning error opened the floodgates for the only 2 runs of the game to score.  The Mets are limping to the finish line with their 4th straight loss, and 6th in their last 7 games.  They are now 71-78 on the season.

Mike Pelfrey was solid tonight, but Nats rookie Brad Peacock was a little better.  Peacock (and the rest of the Nats pitchers) shut out the Mets, while Pelfrey gave up 2 runs (both unearned).  The Mets had their chances with runners on base, but just couldn’t get anyone in, batting 1-11 with runners in scoring position.  Jose Reyes lined out to Rick Ankiel (who made a nice diving grab) with 2 on to end the game.

The New York Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Tuesday night at CitiField. Dillon Gee and Chien-Ming Wang were involved in a pitcher’s duel for the first part of the game. Gee pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five. Those two runs were scored on doubles in the sixth inning. The Mets offense struggled against the Wang and the Nationals bullpen. In the bottom of the ninth with runners on the corners and two out, down by one run, Lucas Duda struck out to end the ballgame. With the loss, the Mets currently have a four-game losing streak. 

Duda has been the run threat in the lineup post All Star Break.

Justin Turner played the hero again for the Mets, with his second walkoff win of the year.  He probably enjoyed this one a little more – instead of getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, he crushed a ground-rule double to center to plate Jason Pridie for the winning score.  The win bumps the Mets’ record to 71-73.

Mike Pelfrey tossed a serviceable 6 2/3 innings, in which he spotted Chicago an early 3-0 lead, but clamped down after that.  With a 4-3 lead heading into the 9th, the Mets once again tried Manny Acosta in the closer’s role.  This time didn’t quite work out, as the Cubs tied the game with 2 outs in the 9th.  However, this turned out not to be such a bad thing, as it set the stage for Turner’s heroics.

The New York Mets dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. Game 1 was within reach for most of the game but the Mets fell short 6-5. In his major league debut, Chris Schwinden didn’t put his team in a position to win, allowing three runs right of the bat in the first inning. He went five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four. Game 2 was on the bats. They were quiet all night as the Mets mustered only seven hits. The lone run was scored on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Dreadful doubleheader, just dreadful.

Bay has been seeing more of the home run apple as of late.

Willie Harris hit a 2-run tiebreaking single as part of a 4-run 6th to rally the Mets past the Nats.  The Mets now move to 68-70 on the season.

Mike Pelfrey struggled through his 4 1/3 innings of work (3 runs allowed), but the Mets were able to tag Livan Hernandez with the loss (in what looks to be his last start as a Nat).  While they are using this part of the season to see what they have for their future, it’s encouraging to see that these games aren’t being mailed in (8-2 over their last 10).  Young guys like Lucas Duda (smacked his 9th homer of the year) and Ruben Tejada (2 RBI’s on a hit) are taking the stage now to make their case for playing time in 2012.

The New York Mets were defeated by the Florida Marlins on Tuesday night at CitiField. What started off as a pitcher’s duel led to a easy win for the Marlins. A five-run seventh inning gave them a devastating edge over the Mets. Mike Pelfrey took his eleventh loss of the season as the Mets fall to 64-69 on the year.
