Ryan Zimmerman hit a broken-bat, 2-run single off Bobby Parnell in the 9th to propel the Nats past the Mets.  The loss snaps the Mets’ 3-game win streak and drops them to 67-70.

The Nats looked like they had this one in the bag early.  They pounded an ineffective Dillon Gee for a 5-0 lead after 2 innings, lowlighted by opposing starter Tom Milone cracking a 3-run homer.  But the Mets got 4 back in the 4th to get themselves back in the game.  They would even take a 7-6 lead on Lucas Duda’s sac fly in the 7th, but Bobby Parnell would let it all go to waste.  He only recorded 1 out in the 9th, while allowing the winning runs to score on Zimmerman’s bloop.

The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 7-3 on Friday night in D.C. The Mets offense tacked on early on a David Wright three-run homer and they never looked back. R.A. Dickey pitched six innings allowing three runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out one batter for his seventh win. The Mets have now won six of their last seven games and are only two games under .500.

The New York Mets defeated the Florida Marlins in a 7-5 victory Thursday night. Miguel Batista made an efficient spot start, pitching six innings yielding only two runs. He definitely earned another start. The Mets offense scored four runs in the third inning and three insurance runs in the eighth inning to lead them to victory. They end their homestand with a 66-69 record.

The New York Mets defeated the Florida Marlins in both games of today’s double dip. Game 1 was dominated by pitching, led by R.A. Dickey, as the Mets edged the Marlins 2-1. Game 2 included a bit more offense as the Mets beat the Marlins 5-1 with a great start out of Dillon Gee. The two victories give them a four-game winning streak as they move to 64-68 on the season.

The New York Mets were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies 9-4 on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. Before the Mets could blink, the Phillies had a dominating 9-0 lead. Jonathon Niese turned in his worst outing of the season, allowing eight runs on ten hits and one walk through only four innings of work. The Mets offense came alive late in the game, but it was far too late to make considerable damage. The loss takes them to a putrid 60-68 record as they slip closer to last place in the NL East.

Niese is having a rough go as of late.

The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Mets’ bullpen yet again, and swept the Mets in Queens for the first time in their history.  The Mets’ record now drops to 60-66 on the year.

This game (and really, series) was a microcosm of the difference between a good team and a team in transition.  The division-leading Brewers got a solid performance from their starter, shook off a potential momentum-turning home run (Lucas Duda’s 7th inning blast that tied the game at 2), and buried the Mets late by taking advantage of shaky defense and shoddy relief pitching.

Dickey pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four. He exited the game with a 4-3 lead, in which Bobby Parnell blew in the bottom of the 8th inning. With the game tied, Scott Hairston drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning. Jason Isringhausen closed it out successfully for his 300th career save.

D.J Carrasco served up a go-ahead 3-run homer to Ryan Roberts to propel the Arizona Diamondbacks to a comeback win.  The loss now drops the Mets to 3 games below .500, at 58-61.  They have now dropped 4 in a row and have a 3-10 record over their past 13 games.

This game was a snapshot of two teams going in opposite directions.  The upstart D-Backs, first place in their division, won their 33rd game this season in which they’ve come from behind.  The Mets, however, continue their summer slide out of contention.  Mike Pelfrey had his good stuff working today — after spotting the D-Backs 2 runs in the first, he allowed 2 hits and no earned runs the rest of the way.  Unfortunately, he had to leave in the 5th inning after being struck in the arm by a line drive.  In came Carrasco, and there went the game.  After hitting Willie Bloomquist with a pitch, he gave the 3-run blast to Roberts that turned a 4-2 Mets lead into a 5-4 deficit.  The dog days of summer are definitely here.
