The New York Yankees helped us forget what happened in last night’s ugly affair as they beat up the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim by a score of 9-3. Curtis Granderson smacked two home runs and Robinson Cano finished a single short of the cycle as Ivan Nova picked up his 11th win of the season. With the win, the Yankees are now 70-45 on the season.

Get your brooms out because the Bombers have swept away the Chicago White Sox. Ivan Nova delivered an absolute electric performance tonight, tossing 7.2 innings of one-run ball. Nova, who is constantly auditioning for his spot on the team, struck out a career high 10 Chicago hitters. Offensively, Russell led the way with four RBIs. With the win, the Yanks improve to a season best 68-42, tied with Boston atop the AL East.

Both starters, Bartolo Colon and Ivan Nova, won their respective starts. With the two wins, the Yankees  move to 63-42 and pick up a half game on the Boston Red Sox, who defeated the Chicago White Sox 10-2.

Every summer, the Yankees are tied to trade rumors for at least one stud starting pitcher. Last year, it was Cliff Lee and Dan Haren. This year, it’s Ubaldo Jimenez. The 27-year-old righty had a spectacular season last year, posting a 19-8 record with a 2.88 ERA. Jimenez has hit a few speed bumps thus far this season (5-8, 4.08 ERA), but has gone 5-3 with a 2.55 ERA over the last two months. The Rockies are 9.5 games out and are considering trading their ace for the right package. Young, stud pitcher rarely hit the open trade market, so the Yankees are rightfully doing their due diligence. Here are three postives and three negatives to trading for Ubaldo.

Eduardo Nunez led the way for the Yanks with a 4-4 day at the plate, as they beat the Mets in front of a sellout Citi Field crowd.  The win bumps the Yankees’ record to 49-31, while the Mets fall back to .500 (41-41).

Maybe it was nerves, or maybe they were just due for a stinker after their hot streak, but the Mets looked shaky all around from my view up in Section 515.  They made a bunch of mistakes that the Yankees pounced on: from bad fielding (Daniel Murphy dropped a routine throw that led to a run in the 8th) to bad baserunning (Jose Reyes got thrown out at 3rd on a crucial play in the 7th — more on this a little later) to bad situational hitting (the Mets were 2-10 with RISP.  One of those hits came in the 9th with 2 outs, and the game pretty much already decided by then).

The Yanks jumped all over Jon Niese early — 4 of the first 5 batters got base hits, and it was 3-0 before the Mets had a chance to bat.  But Niese settled down after that and allowed no more runs.  Ivan Nova put guys on in his 5 innings of work (7 hits and 2 walks), but pitched out of his jams effectively, only allowing 1 run.

Old Timers’ Day is always one of the most fun days of the year. But today had special meaning. Long-time trainer Gene Monohan will retire at the end of the season and threw out the first pitch today to Jorge Posada. Joe Torre and Bernie Williams also made their returns to Yankee Stadium, but Adam will have more on that later. The Yankees honored their long-time trainer and the Yankee legends with a 6-4 win in the rubber game of this three game set. With the win, the Yankees to improve to 45-31 overall and 22-4 during day games.

After learning that Joba’s 2011 season is effectively over (Tommy John surgery), the Yankees came out and literally smacked the Tribe, 11-7. Things got ugly early as Indians starter, Fausto Carmona hit Mark Teixeira with a second inning fastball in the right shoulder. The pitch came immediately after Curtis Granderson connected with a solo blast (his 19th) to extend the Yankee lead to 4-0. Both benches cleared, Teixeira/Carmona got into a screaming match while Joe Girardi and Indians’ manager, Manny Acta got into an even more intense shouting match. After the dust settled, the Yankee offense, led by an A-Rod majestic three-run shot (his 12th), came away on top as the Yanks improved to 34-27.

The Seattle Mariners handled the New York Yankees in twelve innings last night by a final score of 5-4. The Yankees got out to an early lead, but the Mariners came back to tie it. Eventually, Adam Kennedy hit a game-winning bases loaded single off of Mariano Rivera for the win. With the loss, the Yankees have lost the series to the M’s and fall to 27-23.

The New York Yankees defeated the New York Mets by a score of 9-3 this cloudy afternoon. The Mets had a two-run lead for most of the game, but the offense exploded in the seventh to put the Yankees on top for good. Luis Ayala got the win for the Yanks and Mike Pelfrey took the loss for the Mets. The Yankees move to 25-20 with the win and the Mets move to 22-24 with the loss.
