The New York Mets defeated the Florida Marlins in both games of today’s double dip. Game 1 was dominated by pitching, led by R.A. Dickey, as the Mets edged the Marlins 2-1. Game 2 included a bit more offense as the Mets beat the Marlins 5-1 with a great start out of Dillon Gee. The two victories give them a four-game winning streak as they move to 64-68 on the season.

The New York Mets were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies 9-4 on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park. Before the Mets could blink, the Phillies had a dominating 9-0 lead. Jonathon Niese turned in his worst outing of the season, allowing eight runs on ten hits and one walk through only four innings of work. The Mets offense came alive late in the game, but it was far too late to make considerable damage. The loss takes them to a putrid 60-68 record as they slip closer to last place in the NL East.

After scoring a total of 9 runs over the past 5 games, the Mets banged out 16 hits and 11 runs to snap their 5-game losing streak and even the weekend series with the Atlanta Braves. They bring their record back to .500, at 56-56.
In one of the more entertaining games they’ve played this year, the Mets’ offense broke through in a big way — every starting position player smacked at least 1 hit, and 8 different Mets crossed the plate. They jumped out to a quick 1st inning, 2-0 lead against Braves starter Tommy Hanson thanks to Justin Turner’s solo shot and David Wright’s RBI double. Starter Jon Niese, however, ran into trouble in the 3rd inning. The Braves cranked out 5 hits in that inning and by the time the dust settled, the Mets were in a 5-2 hole.

Mike Stanton crushed a grand slam in the 10th inning off Jason Isringhausen to send the Mets to their 3rd straight loss. This is their second loss in a row in which a 2-out homer in the 9th tied the game for them. The Mets now drop to 55-54.
Yet another tough loss for the Mets. They had done nothing against Marlins pitching all game, mustering only 1 run through the first 8 2/3 innings of the game. Mike Pelfrey grinded through his 6 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 of them earned). It looked like the Mets were going to lose the game 3-1. But with 2 outs and Angel Pagan on second, Lucas Duda crushed his third homer of the year to send the game to extras.

Jayson Werth’s first inning homer off R.A. Dickey was all the Washington Nationals needed to snap the Mets’ 5-game winning streak — it provided all the runs scored in the game. Dickey’s record drops to 5-9, while the team falls to 55-52.
The story of tonight’s game was Nats starter Yunesky Maya. Jason Marquis was scheduled to start the game, but was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks shortly before game time. That forced the Nats to call up Maya and throw him into tonight’s start. Maya made the most of his opportunity, shutting the Mets out in his 5 1/3 innings of work. He didn’t even allow a hit until the 4th inning.

The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals in an 8-5 victory on Friday night at Nationals Park. The Mets offense put up a four spot in the 1st inning and scattered twelve hits in the game. Dillon Gee pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks while striking out five. The bullpen held on to hand the Mets a five-game winning streak.
These guys just keep on rollin'.

The New York Mets defeated the Cincinnati Reds in a 4-2 victory on Monday night. The Mets offense exploded in the seventh inning, giving them team a 4-1 lead. Three of those runs were driven in with two outs. R.A. Dickey backed them up on the mound, pitching 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball. The bullpen closed the door without allowing a run to lead the Mets back to a .500 record.

The New York Mets edged the Florida Marlins in a 7-6 victory on Friday night. David Wright’s return was a great success and led the Mets team in a 12-hit marathon. Mike Pelfrey turned in another horrid outing allowing four runs on five hits and four walks in six innings , but the bullpen was good enough to help them win the game. The Mets have now won 50 games this season.
David Wright excelled in what felt like his second opening day of the season.

The New York Mets lost the weekend series versus the Philadelphia Phillies on their home turf Sunday afternoon. Starter Kyle Kendrick silenced their bats, while the Phillies walked all over the Mets pitching. Mike Pelfrey couldn’t pitch passed the 5th after allowing a three-run homer with one out in the inning. The Mets are currently back at .500 with a 47-47 record and are 8.5 games out of the wild card lead.

With the All Star Break underway, the New York Mets are one game above .500 at 46-45 on the season, and trail the wild card leading Atlanta Braves by 7.5 games. The Mets have certainly exceeded expectations thus far in 2011, as most fans would’ve expected them to be way out of the playoff run at this point in the season. Now, this doesn’t mean Mets fans should get crazy excited about making a push for October baseball. Three of the team’s four starting infielders (David Wright, Ike Davis, and Jose Reyes) are currently on the disabled list, and will probably make their return after the trade deadline. But, regardless, the Mets have played very nice baseball over the first 91 games of the season, and I’m going to evaluate the areas that deserve the most credit.
Terry Collins deserves much of the credit for a winning baseball team in Queens.
