Week 4 of the NFL preseason presents us with a tantalizing Super Bowl rematch. Forgive us if we’re not as excited to see this contest as we were Super Bowl XLVII. It’s unlikely neither team plays their starters very long in this contest or tries very hard to win it.
The NFL odds makers have posted the NY Giants as a one-point favorite for this game, which is truly a toss-up.
New England Patriots @ New York Giants
Betting Line: Giants -1
The toughest part of handicapping preseason games is knowing just how much effort each team – and each head coach – wants to exert. Considering the Giants are the reigning Super Bowl champions and the Patriots are the current Super Bowl favorites, it’s unlikely that either team really pushes the envelope in this contest.
If the battle comes down to depth, which it usually does in the preseason, the Patriots should have the edge. Their quarterback rotation has proven to be quite strong as Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer have looked very capable in their stints. So far, that tandem has combined for 494 passing yards, five touchdowns and just two interceptions through two preseason games.
The Giants secondary probably doesn’t want to hear about that as their depth among defensive backs has become paper-thin. With starter Prince Amukamura suffering a high ankle sprain, the Giants are in a bit of a pickle seeing is how Terrell Thomas (knee), Brandon Bing (hamstring), and Jayron Hosley (turf toe) were already sidelined.
On the whole, don’t expect either side to go too hard for this game. Most key players will be rested as both team simply try to avoid injuries as the preseason comes to a conclusion.
