The AL East-leading New York Yankees just took a series from the Boston Red Sox. Now they move on to another version of Yanks-Sox, this one a series with the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox down on the South Side of Second City.

Series Set-Up

New York won the rubber match of its series at home vs. Boston Sunday night 4-1, getting two home runs from Ichiro and another quality outing from Hiroki Kuroda.

The White Sox, meanwhile, just got swept three games in Kansas City over the weekend, scoring a total of eight runs in the process.

So heading into this series the Yanks lead the AL East by five games over the second-place Rays, while the White Sox lead the AL Central by a game and a half over the second-place Tigers.

If the playoff started today the Sox would be headed to Texas for a divisional-round series with the Rangers, while the Yankees would be sitting at home waiting for the arrival of the winner of the one-game AL Wild-Card playoff.

Hitting the Hill

Chicago will send Gavin Floyd (9-9, 4.43) to the mound Monday night against Freddy Garcia (7-5, 4.68) for New York. Then Tuesday newly acquired Francisco Liriano (4-10, 5.22) will shoot for his second win for the Sox against Ivan Nova (11-6, 4.76) for the Yanks. And Wednesday Chicago will throw Chris Sale (14-4, 2.72) vs. Phil Hughes (12-10, 4.23) for New York.

Previously in This Series …

In the only previous meeting this season between these teams they split four games at Yankee Stadium back in late June. The Sox took the first two games by scores of 4-3 and 14-7, but the Yanks salvaged the split with 4-0 and 4-2 victories in the final two games.

Three of those four games played ‘under’ on the MLB betting totals.

Injury Report: Yanks Down Two

Not only has New York been playing without A-Rod, who’s on the DL with a broken bone in his hand, but Mark Teixeira missed the entire Boston series with a sore wrist, and his status for this series is uncertain.
