Two of the hottest teams in the bigs, the Yankees and Nationals, meet up for a series in Washington and we’ve got a couple MLB picks for you.

Right now the Yankees are first in the AL East with a 37-25 record, while the Nationals are first in the NL East with a 38-23 mark. On Friday it’s Phil Hughes pitching for New York and Gio Gonzalez on the mound for Washington.

Hughes has rebounded nicely after a shaky outing against the Los Angeles Angels, getting two straight wins, the first in Detroit over the Tigers and the latest against the Mets at Yankee Stadium. Hughes dominated the Tigers in a complete game four-hitter and will be called on to have another great road session against the red-hot Nats.

For Washington, Gonzalez continues to be lights out. He’s 8-2 with a 2.35 ERA and considering the value we’re getting on him (-115 at the sportsbooks), we think the Nationals are the best pick for Friday’s opener.

As for Saturday, it’s a different story with Andy Pettite going against Jordan Zimmerman. Zimmerman has been excellent but hasn’t got a lot of run support during his starts. He’s failed to win in any of his last three appearances despite giving up only nine runs in total. We all know what Pettitte brings to the table. Since returning to the team, he’s gone 3-2 with a 2.81 ERA. He’s been especially nasty against left-handed hitters, owning a 1.32 ERA mark with 17 strikeouts versus only two walks in 13.2 innings pitched.

Though the MLB odds for Saturday’s games aren’t out just yet, we can expect some more close lines for this one. However, with Pettitte straight dealing and the team rolling on all cylinders, the Yankees are our best bet for the second game of the series.
