The New York Mets were defeated by the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 on Monday night. Chris Schwinden pitched five innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out five. The Mets offense rallied for three runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. With a 4-3 lead heading into the seventh inning, Tim Byrdak and Josh Stinson gave up three runs to put them down by two. The Mets fell short a run as their record goes to 76-84 on the season.
Well, the bullpen blew another one tonight. Tim Byrdak gave up two runs without recording an out for his second straight appearance. Josh Stinson yielded a run and has now allowed at least one run in three of his last four outings. On the bright side, Dale Thayer and Bobby Parnell combined to pitch a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.
Tonight’s offense was all about the top of the lineup. Both Jose Reyes and Ruben Tejada had three-hit performances. Reyes doubled for the 31st time this season and raised his batting average to .334. Nick Evans had a big night as well, going 2 for 5 while driving in two runs. He’s done well since his last promotion from the minor leagues.
