Nick Evans smacked a 3-run homer in a 4-run first inning for the Mets, and they never looked back as they avoided a sweep in Philly.  They snapped a 5-game losing streak and bumped their record to 61-68.

The story of this game was told in the second inning.  Mike Pelfrey was threatening to do what Mike Pelfrey does all too often — let the game unravel out of control.  6 Phillies had already reached base in the inning, and 3 of them crossed the plate, cutting an early 4-0 Mets lead to 4-3.  But with the bases loaded, he was somehow able to get Hunter Pence to fly out and escape the inning with the lead intact.  Even more incredibly, he wouldn’t allow any more runs in the game, turning in an official quality start — 6 innings, 3 runs.  It certainly wasn’t a pretty stat line (9 hits, 2 walks), but it was enough for his 7th win of the year.
