The New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres 5-4 in extra inning fashion Monday night. The Mets began the night with two home runs in the second inning giving them a 3-0 lead. R.A. Dickey pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four. He exited the game with a 4-3 lead, in which Bobby Parnell blew in the bottom of the 8th inning. With the game tied, Scott Hairston drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning. Jason Isringhausen closed it out successfully for his 300th career save.

My Reaction:

Lucas Duda and Josh Thole are future pieces in the Mets organization. Why so? Both of them had three hits in tonight’s ball game, including a home run each. They combined to drive in four of the Mets five runs in the game. I can see Lucas Duda opening the season at one of the corner outfield spots. If Jason Bay is still on the team, Duda will play in right field. Josh Thole, on the other hand, hasn’t shown enough value at the catcher position. I’m not sure if he will earn the starting gig behind the dish in 2012, but his contact approach at the plate is very sufficient for the role at the major league level.

Congratulations to Jason Isringhausen for accomplishing such a tremendous feat. Who would’ve thought that he’d be closing games for the Mets at this point in the season? Well, I actually had a feeling he’d be the replacement for K-Rod before the season began, but that’s not important. The closer’s role has become such an important part of the game and its nice that he gets recognition for that. By the way, how many of you knew that Izzy recorded his first save in a Mets uniform? Yes, just a little fun fact.

Interesting Facts:

  • Angel Pagan is hitting .366 (15 for 41) during his current nine-game hitting streak.
  • David Wright has stolen at least ten bases in each of the last seven seasons. No doubt, he is one of the most underrated base stealers in the game.
  • Jason Isringhausen became the 23rd closer to reach the 300 saves mark.

What’s Next?: The New York Mets look to take the series against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. Game Time 10:05 PM on SNY.
