The New York Yankees defeated the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 9-2 this afternoon. Phil Hughes successfully got the Yankees through the first six innings with a little help from the offense, specifically Jorge Posada (see more below) With the win, the Yankees fall to 72-46 on the season.
The story of today’s game was the designated hitter, Jorge Posada. Posada had a career day, going 3-5 with a two-run single in the second and a grand slam in the fifth. The grand slam blew open the game, which was relaxing to see after last night’s debacle. Even though this was Posada’s first start in six games, you really can’t expect him to get too much more playing time – he has just been maddeningly inconsistent all year. With his 10th homer of the year, the Yankees now have seven players who have at least that amount. The other Yankee home run today was by Curtis Granderson, who smacked his 33rd of the season to right field.
The Yankees, who have grown a fondness of losing the first game then sweeping the rest of the series, will look to do just that tomorrow against the Rays.
