After 2 straight inspiring wins, the Mets played an ugly one to drop to 58-58 on the season. R.A. Dickey took yet another home loss, and the San Diego Padres pounced on a ton of Mets mistakes to win this one.
Wow, was this a stinker — where to start with all the miscues? 2 throwing errors in the 2nd inning. Loading the bases with none out in the 2nd and failing to score at all. Ruben Tejada getting thrown out at home on a sac fly because he didn’t slide. Letting the Padres execute a double steal in which the lead runner stole home. This is one Terry Collins & Co. will surely want to forget.
Despite all that, though, the Mets did show some fight in the bottom of the 9th, and somehow brought the tying run up with 2 outs and the bases loaded. But it was too little, too late, as Willie Harris lined out to end the game.
3 Up:
-Josh Thole: A 4-5 night, with 2 runs scored.
-Ruben Tejada (besides his baserunning): Had a 3-hit night, as well as a great jumping throw on a ball deep in the hole.
-Mike Baxter: Picked up his first hit as a Met, as well as working 2 walks.
3 Down:
-R.A. Dickey: He put the team in an early hole, allowing the first batter of the game to triple and come around to score. He committed a throwing error in the second, and put his team down 5-0 after 3 innings. His home record now drops to 1-8.
-Angel Pagan: Committed the other throwing error in the 2nd, then left in the 4th inning with back spasms.
-Getting Them In: The Mets left 13 men on base.
On Deck: The Mets and Padres wrap up their 4-game set with a matinee tomorrow. First pitch scheduled for 12:10 PM.
