The New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres in walk-off fashion on Monday night. With runners on second and third and one out, Lucas Duda singled in the tying and winning runs to put the Mets over the Padres 9-8. The rally came against ex-Met Heath Bell, who had also given up an RBI single to David Wright. The Mets currently sit at 57-57 on the season with the victory.

My Reaction:

The Mets win in epic fashion the night after they lose a terrible one from the Atlanta Braves. Lucas Duda approached the plate in the 9th having already smacked hits in his two previous at-bats. He placed the ball perfectly right up the middle to score both runners. He was 3 for 5 on the night, boosting his average to .273 on the year. Duda should see much more playing time at first base now that Daniel Murphy is out for the season. It’ll be nice to see how he does in the final six weeks left.

Mike Pelfrey pitched like himself tonight, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out four in 6 1/3 innings. He is such a disappointment in my mind right now. He rolled through five innings and then hit a wall with a 4-1 lead. Pelfrey allowed four hits in the sixth inning and saw his lead turn into a tie. It’s the same story over and over for him. Sure, he’ll have a couple of good starts and critics say he’s starting to turn it around, but it hasn’t happened yet. The man is 49-51 for his career with an ERA around 4.40. I wouldn’t mind if he wasn’t in the Mets starting rotation come 2012.

Interesting Facts:

  • Jason Bay launched his 200th career home run in the second inning to give the Mets the lead. David Wright and Angel Pagan also hit home runs.
  • Pedro Beato and Ryoto Igarashi combined to pitch 1 2/3 innings allowing four runs on two hits, two walks, and a hit batsman.
  • Mike Baxter collected his first hit in a Mets uniform on an RBI double.
