The New York Mets were defeated by the Florida Marlins in late-inning fashion, as a poorly executed defensive play led to two runs scoring in the top of the ninth inning. Justin Turner wasted a solid start out of Chris Capuano by botching a throw to first base with the bases loaded and one out. Capuano pitched six innings allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five. This is the third consecutive game the Mets have endured a loss in the ninth inning or later, as they fall back to .500 at 55-55 on the season.

Tough night for Justin Turner with the botched play.

My Reaction:

I have two words to describe Omar Infante: Met killer. Entering tonight’s game, Infante boasted an incredible .362 career average versus the Mets in nearly 200 at-bats. Tonight was no different as he hit two solo shots to left field off of Chris Capuano. It’s funny, though, because I feel there are more guys that hit well against the team than not.

Jose Reyes went deep in tonight’s ballgame. It was his first home run since July 23rd against the Marlins. A special thanks to 10-year old kidcaster Jacob Resnick for making a terrific call on the play. He sounded like a natural in the booth with Gary, Ron, and Keith. Despite the home run, Reyes has seen his batting average fall to .339 on the year. It’ll be interesting to see where he is at the end of the season.

I hate seeing the Mets drop so many disheartening games in a row: Sunday’s walk-off single against Bobby Parnell, last night’s Mike Stanton grand slam, and tonight’s messy error scoring two. It’s not the direction Mets fans are hoping this team heads. However, every team hits a rough patch every once in a while and I believe tomorrow is a much-needed game to win.

Interesting Facts:

  • Angel Pagan swiped his 20th bag of the season. He stole a career-high 37 bases in 2010.
  • Jason Isringhausen took his second loss in consecutive games.
  • Lucas Duda tied the game in the late innings for the second straight night.

What’s Next?: The New York Mets look to salvage the final game of the series against the Florida Marlins on Wednesday night. Game Time 7:10 PM on SNY.

NYM Dillon Gee (10-3) 3.69 ERA vs. FLA Clay Hensley (1-3) 3.09 ERA
