The New York Mets failed to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals, as they took a 6-2 loss in one of the shortest games of the season. Albert Pujols set the tone for the game with a quick two-run shot to left field in the 1st inning off Jonathon Niese. A messy 5th put the game away for good. The Mets had six base runners all game and never really posed a threat to rally.

Niese had a couple of bad innings.

My Reaction:

Jonathon Niese went six innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out seven. All season he has struggled to stay away from the big inning hurting him. This afternoon, Niese gave up five runs in essentially two innings. I’d like to defend him, since he kept to a 1.00 WHIP and two of the five runs he allowed were scored due to error, but this is becoming a habit for him. I believe he has the kind of stuff to dominate, much like a No 1. or No.2 starter, but he always seems to regress to that No. 3 role. The strikeouts are right where I want them to be. I’d like to see him buckle down under pressure. Honestly, I think of any Mets pitcher, he has the best chance to throw a no-hitter, as silly as that may sound. I don’t think it was a coincidence that he was born the day the Mets won the 1986 World Series.

Let’s move on to Lucas Duda. Today he went 2 for 3, including his tenth double of the season. He still has yet to hit a home run this year, but the power is definitely there. He has gotten a hit in seven of his last eight games, and when Carlos Beltran gets dealt, he should be in line to take over in right field. A young kid with a ton of upside.

Interesting Facts:

  •  On a single to centerfield, Angel Pagan threw behind the runner at first, but unfortunately, who he had thought was Lucas Duda was in reality the Cardinals first base coach.
  • Albert Pujols now has 20 career home runs against the Mets, only 4.7% of his total.
  • Rumors have circled that this is Carlos Beltran’s final game in a Mets uniform.

What’s Next?: The New York Mets kick off a three-game series against the Florida Marlins beginning Friday night at Sun Life Stadium. Game Time 7:10 PM on SNY.

NYM Mike Pelfrey (5-9) 4.67 ERA vs. FLA Chris Volstad (5-8) 5.59 ERA

Who do you want to see in right field when Carlos Beltran is traded away?
