Boy, does that CC Sabathia get a lot of unnecessary run support. The Yankees came out absolutely smoking today, with everyone in the lineup (sans Robby Cano) getting at least one hit. The catalysts for the offense were Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira. A-Rod went 2-3 with three RBI and a run scored while Mark Teixeira hit his 22nd home run of the year in garbage time.

CC Sabathia’s performance was simply one that we’ve all come to expect of him. He allowed an average of one base runner per inning, and by the time he allowed his only run, the game was well in hand. Today was the 11th time this season he has completed at least seven innings, which is necessary when the bullpen is as erratic as it has been. Outside of Mariano Rivera and David Robertson, the bullpen has simply let too many runners get on base and cross the plate. Today, in the ninth inning, Buddy Carlyle walked two and allowed a two-run home run before he could muster up the three outs. With all of the bullpen injuries, literally anyone in the bullpen who can give Joe Girardi some consistency will be an integral part of this team going forward.

Key Stats

10: With the win, CC takes the Major League lead with 10 wins on the season.

Sitting Out?: By the seventh inning today, the Rockies had pulled Troy Tulowitzki, Todd Helton, and Carlos Gonzalez. At that point, the score was only 6-0. I hate seeing teams quit, but it really just made no sense – at that point, will an extra two innings really tire out these guys that much?

What’s Next?

The Yankees will try to take the series from the Rockies tomorrow at 2:05 PM. Tomorrow will also be Old Timer’s Day, as first-time Old Timers Joe Torre, Lou Pinella, Bernie Williams, Tino Martinez, and many others will be in attendance. I’ll be out in the left-field bleachers hopefully seeing an Ivan Nova victory.
