Jorgie’s sixth inning two-run blast proved to be the difference as the Yankees topped the Reds, 4-2 in the first game of a double dip. Before the blast, Posada had went 126 at-bats(!!) without a home run, the second longest drought in his career. Yankee starter Freddy Garcia gave up two unearned runs (thanks, Ramiro) in seven innings of work. The bullpen (D-Rob & Mo) was dynamite again in relief as the Yankee improve to 43-29 on the season.
Really not too much to sort through from this one. A-Rod didn’t play since his shoulder was a little sore. Ramiro Pena started at third instead and made three (yes, 3) errors. His two errors in the fifth gave the Reds their runs. No need to fear because Eric Chavez (broken foot) is taking grounders and hitting BP in Tampa. He should start running next week. As for Pena, I want to see him play in Game 2 of the double header. The Yanks don’t want him getting down on himself.
Mark Teix didn’t play, either. Jorge got the start at first base and his HR proved to be the decisive blow. Always nice to win when your #3 AND #4 hitters don’t play.
Give it up for Freddy. Seven strong innings today. Only gave way to three hits and a walk. Nice to see him pick up his sixth win and drop his ERA to 3.30. He’s been great for the Yanks so far.
22: Mariano Rivera has converted 22 saves in a row against the National League.
Game Two of the double header starts at 7:10. Yanks are going for the sweeeep.
7:10 PM: Brian Gordon (0-0, 3.38 ERA) vs. Johnny Cueto (4-2, 1.68 ERA)
