The Angels’ bats battered Mets starter Jon Niese early to cruise to the win in Sunday’s rubber game.  The loss drops the Mets to 35-37, and it their first series loss since May 27-29 (Phillies).

The difference in the game was the starting pitchers.  Angels starter Tyler Chatwood pitched 7 shutout innings for the win, while Niese gave up 5 runs (4 earned) in only 4 innings of work.  The heavy damage in the game came in the 2nd inning.  With the bases loaded and 2 outs in the inning, Erick Aybar tripled to clear the bases and give the Halos a 4-0 lead.  The Angels plated individual runs in innings 5-7 to push the lead to 7-0.  The Mets then scored 3 runs off the bats of Jose Reyes, Justin Turner, and Carlos Beltran in the 9th to save some face.

3 Up:

-Josh Thole: Despite the Mets’ offensive struggles for the day, he delivered a 2-3 day at the plate.

-D.J. Carrasco: Pitched a perfect inning in mop-up duty, in his first appearance since the nightmare in Atlanta.  You gotta start somewhere, I guess.

-Fathers: Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!

3 Down:

-Jon Niese: From the start you could see he just didn’t have his command today — he was due for a bad one after being so good lately.

-The Cleanup Spot: Daniel Murphy and Scott Hairston (for when he pinch hit for Murphy) combined for an 0-5 day.

-Defense: Thole allowed a passed ball in the 1st, and Turner botched a throw in the 5th.  Both set up extra runs to score for the Angels.

On Deck: The Mets get the day off tomorrow before welcoming the Oakland A’s for a 3-game set at Citi Field starting Tuesday.
