The New York Mets defeated the Los Angeles Angels 6-1 on Saturday night. A complete game pitching performance and great hitting gave the Mets the advantage in this one. With the victory, the team is now 35-36 as they look to get back to .500 and win the series tomorrow.

The Scoop:

Mike Pelfrey faced off against Dan Haren in the middle game of the series. Pelfrey pitched a complete game allowing only one run on five hits and no walks while striking out five. This was the third straight start in which he had not yielded a walk. The only run he allowed came across via a solo homer in the sixth inning.

The Mets offense helped Pelf’s cause. They put up the first run of the game in the third inning on a Carlos Beltran single. The Mets scored two more runs in the fourth to go up 3-0. Carlos Beltran put the game away on a two-run blast in the fifth inning to give Pelfrey a 6-0 lead to work with. That was all she wrote as Pelfrey rolled on to earn his fourth win of the season.

The Positives:

Beltran Belts One: Carlos Beltran was 2 for 4 tonight, with a huge two-run home run to give the Mets a large lead. He drove in three runs total and brought his average up to a solid .286 on the season. He’s made 63 starts through the first 71 games. Who would’ve ever thought…?

The Bay Way: Jason Bay was 2 for 4, including an RBI single that put the Mets up 2-0 in the 4th inning. Over a modest four game hitting streak, Bay is 7 for 17. Maybe this is the beginning of a breakout.

The Negatives:

None to speak of.

Interesting Facts:

  • Mets stole four bases tonight. As a team, they lead the majors in that category with 72.
