The Scoop:

Chris Capuano took the mound against Joel Pineiro in the opener of the series. Capuano pitched six innings allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out five. This is the third straight start he has given the Mets a good enough chance to win the game.

The offense struggled against the Angels pitching. The Mets managed eight hits and drew five walks, but could only push across three runs. They left 22 men on base and couldn’t seem to advance their runners as well as they have done in the past. Poor hitting in the clutch and bad defense earned the Mets their second straight loss.

The Positives:

Angel vs. Angels: Angel Pagan was 2 for 4 tonight, driving in two of the three Met runs on clutch singles. It was his ninth multi-hit game since coming off the DL at the end of May. He’s raised his batting average to .255 on the season.

Paulino: Ronny Paulino has really made the case to take over the starting duties at catcher. After a 2 for 4 performance tonight, he is batting .329 in 79 at-bats this season. He doubled in an 8th inning run to narrow the deficit to one. Meanwhile, Josh Thole is batting .234 in 48 starts at catcher.

The Negatives:

No way, Jose: Jose Reyes botched an inning ending ground ball in the 6th inning which later resulted in a run scoring. He was also 0 for 4 at the plate with a walk and a stolen base, failing to score as the tying run in the 9th inning.

Interesting Facts:

  • Ruben Tejada is 0 for 15 over the last four games.
  • Jose Reyes stole his 24th base of the season. He is second in the National League behind Michael Bourn.
