The New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 on Monday night at CitiField. The offense had another huge night at the plate, smacking fifteen hits while using small ball to score most of their runs. The Mets are now 25-28 on the season as Dillon Gee earned his 5th win of the year!

The Scoop:

Dillon Gee faced off against Charlie Morton in the opener of a four-game series. Gee pitched very strong tonight, allowing three runs on five hits and NO walks while striking out eight. Although he gave up a quick two-run home run to Chris Snyder in the 2nd inning, he made adjustments and retired the next nine batters in a row. Gee has been able to keep the Mets in the game in every one of his starts this year, which is what you want to see from a young pitcher.

The Mets offense picked up right where they left off. With Jose Reyes on the bereavement list, the Mets had to mess with the lineup a bit, which responded very nicely. The Mets used small ball in the bottom of the 2nd to tie the game up at two apiece. They then took the lead on an Angel Pagan single that put the Mets up 3-2. Another tie was broken up in the late innings which eventually led to a 7-3 victory for New York.

The Positives:

Two-ribeye Thole: With the game tied in the bottom of the 7th, Josh Thole doubled in two runs to put the Mets up 5-3. Even though he was 1 for 4, he came up with the big hit of the night.

Three for Three: Daniel Murphy, Angel Pagan, and Ruben Tejada each had three-hit performances. Murphy drove in a run and scored twice. Pagan drove in a run and crossed the plate once. Tejada singled in the Mets first run of the game on a swinging bunt. This trio accounted for nine of the Mets fifteen total hits tonight.

The Negatives:

None to speak of.

Interesting Facts:

  • At one point, Dillon Gee struck out five batters in a row.
  • Since returning from his DL stint, Angel Pagan has a modest four game hitting streak in which he is 7 for 17.
  • Daniel Murphy has consecutive three-hit nights.
