The Scoop:

Chris Young took the mound against Cliff Lee in the final game of the series. Young rebounded very nicely from an average outing at best his last time on the mound. He pitched seven strong innings and only gave up two hits to the robust Phillies lineup. The bullpen took over in the 8th inning and got the job done as well. Although Jason Isringhausen allowed the tying run to score, the rest of the ‘pen was solid through six innings of work.

The Mets bats couldn’t come alive against Cliff Lee. Even though they roughed him up for eight hits and drew two walks, the big hit was missing in action. Carlos Beltran was the only hitter to drive in a run off of the southpaw in the 5th inning. The Mets had even more trouble against the Phillies bullpen. It took them six innings to finally drive in a run. Ronny Paulino knocked in David Wright in the top of the 14th to put the Mets up 2-1. Taylor Buchholz shut the door in the bottom of the inning to give the Mets a much needed “W”.

The Positives:

Cy Young?: If Chris Young could stay healthy all the time, he has the stuff to win a Cy Young! Tonight, Young went seven innings allowing one run on two hits and three walks, while striking out seven. He handed the ball over to the bullpen with a 1-0 lead.

Paulino Debut: Ronny Paulino made his Mets debut tonight as a starter and it was a good one as he went 5 for 7. The first four hits were singles, but the last hit was a double to left field that scored in the lead runner in the top of the 14th.

The Negatives:

Left on Base: The Mets bats left 32 men on base tonight. Extremely disappointing, but they DID win!

Interesting Facts:

  • Three different Mets swiped bases tonight: Wright, Reyes, and Pridie
  • The crowd chanted U.S.A. on news that Osama Bin Laden had been killed
  • Pedro Beato pitched three innings of relief and his season ERA is still at 0.00
