The New York Yankees defeated the Detroit Tigers tonight by a score of 5-3. Bartolo Colon went seven strong innings and outdueled Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander as Mariano Rivera picked up the save. With the win, the Yankees move to 17-9 on the year and 2-0 in the month of May.
I don’t want to be the one to jinx him, but Bartolo is getting off to quite the start:
The Yankees got to Justin Verlander in the first and second innings, with the highlight being Jorge Posada’s ground-rule double with the bases loaded. In the second, Eduardo Nunez (subbing in for the day-to-day Robinson Cano) slapped a double to score Brett Gardner.
Although Bartolo Colon did not earn the win (Joba did), he still threw one hell of a game and kept the Yankees involved. Sure, Miguel Cabrera went 3-4 with an RBI single, but that is expected. After Joba Chamberlain pictched through the eighth, the resurgent Nick Swisher singled in Mark Teixeira and a wild pitch to Jorge Posada scored Alex Rodriguez for insurance. Mo pitched a perfect ninth to close out the Yankees’ third straight win.
3,000 Watch: Derek Jeter went 2-5 to raise his career total to 2,951. When do you think he will crack 3,000?
1-1: Brett Gardner went 1-1 with two walks and a sacrifice tonight for by far his most productive outing of the year. Even more impressive was that it was against Justin Verlander.
Speaking of which, Justin Verlander threw 128 pitches through six innings tonight. That is how you beat one of the best pitchers in the game.
The Yankees and Tigers continue their four-game series tomorrow at 7:05.
7:05 PM, YES. Freddy Garcia (1-1, 2.00 ERA) vs. Max Scherzer (4-0, 3.82 ERA)
