The New York Mets were defeated by the Houston Astros 6-1 on Tuesday night at CitiField. They have lost eight of their last nine games and fall to 5-12 on the season. The Mets look to win some games at CitiField starting tomorrow night against the same team.

Hairston drops a routine fly ball. Time for Alderson to make a move...

The Scoop:

Jonathon Niese faced off against Wandy Rodriguez in the opener of a three-game set versus the Astros. Niese continued to struggle in tonight’s start, allowing two runs on seven hits and five walks in only six innings pitched. Through four starts, he is winless with an inflated 5.87 ERA.

The offense was idle to say the least. Rodriguez came into the matchup with a 7.31 ERA and left with a 5.48 ERA. The Mets bats couldn’t figure him out, only getting three hits and drawing three walks against the southpaw. Carlos Beltran launched a home run off of Rodriguez in the bottom of the 7th inning to score the only Met run of the game.

The Positives:

Beltran: Carlos Beltran drove in the only run of the game, as he belted his third home run of the season. He is really making a case for other teams to get interested in him.

The Negatives:

The Gloves: Scott Hairston dropped a fly ball in left field, while Justin Turner made a bad throw to first. Terry Collins promised to “play the game right”. Well…I don’t see it.

The Bats: Outside of Carlos Beltran, Mets hitters were 3 for 32 at the plate. This was off of a starting pitcher with a Batting Average Against of over .350. Unbelievable!

The ‘Pen: In three innings of relief, the Mets bullpen allowed four runs on four hits and a walk. This bullpen has NO identity whatsoever. Roles need to be decided at this point in the season. Beato and Buchholz stay, the rest must be re-evaluated.

Interesting Facts:

  • The Mets starting rotation has a combined 3-8 record through the first 17 games.
  • Pedro Beato has yet to allow an earned run in ten innings pitched.
  • David Wright is hitless in his last 16 at bats.
