Eleven total home runs were hit at Yankee Stadium this weekend. The Yankees continued that trend tonight, smacking two home runs en route to a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Ivan Nova gave the Yankees a quality start (six innings, three runs) and allowed the impressive trio of JoSoMo to work their magic over the last three innings. Nova recorded his first win and the confidence of Yankee fans. With the win, the Yankees improve to 3-1 on the young season.

A-Rod Getting Love After His First Inning HR

Alex Rodriguez started things off in the first-inning with a scream line drive homer down the left field line. Jorge Posada smacked a second-inning two-run bomb. The Yankees wouldn’t score for the rest of the game, but they didn’t need to. Ivan Nova gave the Bombers a quality start, tossing six innings of three run ball. Nova scattered six hits and walked only one hitter. In particular, Nova kept Joe Mauer in check, limiting him to an 0 for 3 night. The Yankees won’t ask for more than five or six innings from Nova each time out, so I don’t think Joe Girardi could be any happier with Nova’s 2011 debut.

I talked about this on Thursday, but I love the Jo-So-Mo trio out of the pen. The trio tossed three scoreless frames, holding the Twins to only two hits. That scam artist Jason Kubel singled off of Mo, but playas are gonna play. Can’t do anything about that.

Anyway, having two shut down arms in Rivera and Soriano is a huge advantage. Joba stepping up is just icing on the cake.

Key Stats

3: Jorge Posada has three home runs on the young season. People (including yours truly) definitely questioned whether Jorge had anything left in the tank after a very pedestrian 2010 campaign. I don’t think anyone will question whether ole Georgie can still smack a fastball. Posada’s days behind the dish are finished, but he has a lot to prove this season.

615: A-Rod hit his 615th career homer tonight. A-Rod looks very confident at the dish and strong starts carry over for the rest of the season.

6 and 3: Quality starts. I’m going to harp on it all season long. Nova gave the Yankees a quality start and that’s all we can ask for.

What’s Next?
