Last week, the Mets released some dead weight last week when they let Luis Castillo go. Today, they let go of all of that dead weight by releasing lefty Oliver Perez. It was a long time coming for the 29-year-old Perez. In four seasons with the Mets, Perez went 28-26 with an ERA over 4.50. A¬†noticeable¬†decline in Perez’s velocity relegated him to bullpen duties last season. Perez is in the final year of a three-year, $36 million deal with the Mets. Regardless if another team claims Perez, the Mets will still be on the hook for at least $11 million.

I’ve stated time and time again that the Mets couldn’t bring Perez north. The fan base would have gone wild with him on the roster. The vibe around Citi Field won’t be a great one this year and removing some of negative distractions will only help.

The majority of the Met clubhouse never liked Perez. It’s an all-around good riddance for the Mets.
