The Yankees announced today that catcher Francisco Cervelli fractured his foot after fouling a ball off of it earlier this week. Cervelli will spend the next four weeks in a walking boot and will require an addition two to four weeks in order to get back into baseball shape. The Yankees will be without Cisco The Kid for at least the first month of the season.

Enter uber-prospect, Jesus Montero. With Cervelli out of the picture, Montero has a clear path to the backup catcher’s role and could even overtake Russell Martin. Joe Girardi has no plans to use Jorge Posada at catcher for the first month of the season. I’m in favor of getting Montero some at-bats early in the season. If he hits right away, there’s no way that the Yankees will send him back down.

The first month of the season just got a lot more interesting..
