Just when you thought the NFL was over and the only stories we were going to get is labor negotiations and Carson Palmer putting his house on the market, yet another member of the New York Jets has made headlines in a negative light. This time, it’s starting quarterback Mark Sanchez – and this week, he is Adam’s Adversary.

In case you have missed the story, the good folks over at Deadspin have not only broken the story, but also followed up with it in a very professional manner. The article is long – but here’s the gist of it: Mark and tight end Dustin Keller went out on the town in Manhattan and Mark met a young lady who was obviously very smitten with meeting an NFL quarterback. The two hit it off and went out on dates and such. There was only one issue (which may not even be an issue, depending on your morality); she’s 17.

Now there’s any number of questions that could be brought up here. Let’s start by picking on Mark. Mark, what were you thinking? You are 24 years old. You have witnessed people not only in your league let their personal lives be destroyed by what they do off the field (Michael Vick, Ben Roethlisberger, Adam “Pacman” Jones), but also witnessed it within your organization! Thanks to his appearance on “Hard Knocks”, it is now common knowledge that Antonio Cromartie has nine children (at the ripe old age of 26!). I don’t think I even need to bring up the embarrassment that Rex Ryan went through this season, but with these Jets, it really just seems to be one thing after another, after another, after another… But Mark, my point here is that like it or not, you (and all other professional athletes) are targets for women. At USC, Mark Sanchez and teammate Brian Cushing (now of the Houston Texans) were arrested in 2006 for sexual assault. The charges were dropped, but don’t you think this would have completely scared him straight? Also, do you really think that this girl was not informed by her friends (and lawyer) that The Sanchize signed a contract for $50 million, $28 million of which was guaranteed?

This girl, who is identified in the articles as E.K., will already be going through enough, but I do think the question needs to be asked, at least rhetorically, what was she doing at a nightclub in Manhattan? Her lawyer is feverishly trying to keep her name from becoming public due to her desire to not “risk any jobs or college in the future” which is an understandable request. However, if she was really that serious about her professional career, why would she have been at a lavish nightclub in Manhattan?

I’ll admit that I did have some trouble writing this article to completely portray Sanchez as the bad guy. According to Deadspin’s article, the legal age of consent in New York is 17, and the legal age of consent in New Jersey is 16 (where Sanchez lives). Therefore, everything that happened was completely legal. And if he was, say 31, which would make her 24, it would not only be somewhat normal, but he would be applauded for being with such a younger woman.

However, those are not the facts. Much of what are the “facts” have certainly been muddied as her lawyer is trying to retract her story, which was sent via email and phone conversation to A.J. Daulerio of Deadspin, so it will be a situation worth monitoring for Mark Sanchez, E.K. and the New York Jets. However this turns out, Mark, you should have known better. This situation was single-handedly created by Sanchez, and Sanchez alone. My advice to Mark? You’re a suave, NFL quarterback who can have essentially any woman you want. Writer Kenneth Mauss called you a “winner”, which may be the opposite of what writer/editor Matt Vereb said about you in the weekly mailbag. For the sake of your fans, stick with ones over the age of 18. If you do, this is a complete non-story besides the gossip column.
