The New York Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers by a score of 7-2 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. CC Sabathia stepped up big time and allowed only one run in the six innings he threw. With the win, the series record is now Texas 3, New York 2 as it goes back to Texas.

Waking up from a collective series slump, the Yankee offense exploded against Texas starter CJ Wilson. The Yankees earned some and didn’t earn some of their second inning runs but hey, they’re runs. Jorge Posada singled to left field and A-Rod beat home Nelson Cruz’s throw. Later that inning, Curtis Granderson singled home Lance Berkman and moved speedster Jorge Posada to third on a terrible throwing error by ex-Met, Jeff Francouer. Wilson picked up the ball as it pasted third and lofted it a good five feet over the Ranger covering home as Jorge scored on a single from first base, as he’s known to do.

In the third inning, the Yankees earned Bronx Bomber status. Nick Swisher finally broke out of a 1 for 17 (.059) slump by hitting a line drive homer to left field. Robinson Cano followed that act by hitting a home run of his own to right field. It seems that everyone and their sister knows Josh Hamilton has mashed four home runs this series, but Robby also has four of his own. Curtis Granderson also had a monster day for himself, going 3 for 4 with a single, double, and homer.

In a battle of starting pitchers whose names are acronyms, CC outpitched CJ. CC Sabathia went six innings and allowed only two runs on eleven hits. It’s not often you see any team get that many hits with so little runs, but CC did strike out seven while walking none. It also helps that the Rangers left seven runners on base. An unsung hero of today’s game is certainly Kerry Wood, who pitched two innings and only gave up one hit. Wood picked off Elvis Andrus, who got that hit, at second as he was caught leaning to third. Mariano Rivera came in to pitch the non-save situation in the ninth to close out the victory.

The Yankees were able to force the series back to Texas. There will be a day off before the first pitch, which will be at 8:07 PM in Texas. The game can be viewed on TBS. Go Yanks!
