The Rangers began their 85th season with a hat-trick in a debut and an exposing of Ryan Miller and the Sabres.

Derek Stepan became the first player in the 85-year history of the Rangers to score three goals in his first NHL game. Three goals on three shots:

Step had two more great chances to add to his already historic night: a breakaway chance was lifted high, missing the net, and an empty net chance from the Sabres’ blue line caromed off the outside of the post. Five goals would be nice. I’ll take the hat trick any night.

Lundqvist was great most of the game, but he let in two easy goals in the third. At that point though, it was 5-1. The forecheck was relentless. Doobie had two goals, Christensen added another on a great feed behind the net from Marian Gaborik. Great start baby.

Three Stars:

First: Derek Stepan – 3 Goals, +/- 3, 3 Shots On Goal
Second: Dan Girardi – 2 Assists, +/- 3, 2 SOG, 4 Blocked Shots
Third: Derek Stepan
