Initial Reaction:

Jonathon Niese took the mound against Alex Sanabia in Game 2 versus the Florida Marlins. Right out of the get go, Niese gave up five runs in the first inning. The Mets offense had to battle from the beginning, and the closest they got was in the 8th inning when they had the tying run 90 feet away.

Ike Davis and Carlos Beltran have been hitting the ball well throughout September. They combined to go 5 for 9 in the game.

Positives From The Game:

Beltran: Seeing the Carlos Beltran of old is awesome. He went 3 for 5, including a triple (3) and home run (5). In the month of September, Beltran is batting .308 with eight extra-base hits.

Negatives From The Game:

Niese: After giving up six unearned runs in his last start, Jonathon Niese surrendered six runs of his own credit tonight. It all began with a five-run first inning, in which he couldn’t get anybody out. He pitched into the sixth inning, allowing five hits and six walks, while striking out seven. He took the loss for the third consecutive start.

Interesting Facts:

  • Jonathon Niese has only two wins in his last 11 starts.
  • Jose Reyes got the hat trick (three strikeouts) for the first time all season.
  • Ike Davis is hitting .362 in the month of September.
