The New York Mets were defeated by the Washington Nationals 13-3 on Monday afternoon. The Mets really took advantage of Labor Day, as the offense only got three hits, and seemed like they wanted to take the holiday off. They spoil yesterday’s great game by looking horrendous today. Now they are seven games out of last place in the NL East division.

Initial Reaction:

Mike Pelfrey faced off against Jordan Zimmermann in the opener of a three-game set. After being given a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning, it all started to fall apart for Pelf. He gave up an opposite field solo home run to rookie shortstop Danny Espinosa in the bottom of the inning, and then proceeded to allow five more runs to cross the plate in the 4th inning.

The Mets pitching staff is clearly struggling as of late. It may be that the number of innings they’ve pitched has caught up to them. We get to see Dillon Gee pitch in his major league debut tomorrow night. Hopefully he looks better than these other guys we have thrown out.

You know that any game that Oliver Perez makes an appearance has terrible written all over it.

Positives From The Game:

No positives. This might be the worst game played all season.

Negatives From The Game:

Big Pelf: After a less than effective start last time out, Mike Pelfrey completely collapsed in the fourth inning. In 3.2 innings pitched, he allowed six runs on five hits and three walks. He began 2010 at an impressive 9-1 record, but has now fallen to 13-9 on the season.

Offense: David Wright returned from his day off and the lineup was completely silenced. Outside of Wright’s sac fly to drive in the first run of the game and Josh Thole’s two RBIs, there were no other run producers. So much for momentum…
