The New York Mets were defeated by the Atlanta Braves 4-1 on Wednesday night. Even a different look to the lineup could not improve the Mets offense, managing only four baserunners in the game. Atlanta continues to dominate the series and look to sweep the Mets in tomorrow night’s game.

Initial Reaction:

Mike Pelfrey took the mound against Tommy Hanson in Game 3 of 4 against the Atlanta Braves. It wasn’t one of Pelf’s best outings, as it seemed like there was always someone on the bases every inning. He gave up a ton of hits, but didn’t issue a walk (despite hitting a batter). Ron Darling noted that Pelfrey looks like he is trying to pitch to the corners, but finds greater success when he lets his pitches go (works to a lower pitch count in the process). Hanson baffled the Mets offense, and I understand that he’s a stellar young pitcher, but its inexcusable how poorly they performed at the plate.

Lucas Duda made his major league debut tonight. I thought that he looked interesting in the field, making some nice plays, and even though he was 0 for 3, with a strikeout, drove two balls nicely into centerfield. I’m excited to see how he improves and adjusts to major league pitching throughout the week.

Positives From The Game:

Bullpen: The bullpen pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Mike Pelfrey, allowing the Mets offense a chance to rally back.

Defense: Mike Pelfrey needs to thank the players around him for how well they performed in the field. He could’ve given up a few more hits and runs than the box score shows.

Negatives From The Game:

Big Pelf: He wasn’t so “big” tonight. Pelfrey went five innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and no walks, and clearly didn’t have his best stuff.

Offense: I think the term “invisible” could sum it up. They got two hits against Braves pitching. It’s gotten to the point where you just scratch your heads after watching a game like this. Are these major league hitters?

Interesting Facts:

1: Career stolen base for Chris Carter

13: Straight game the Atlanta Braves have held the Mets to three runs or less

Jeff Francoeur has been traded to the Texas Rangers for middle infielder Joaquin Arias.
