Ivan Nova picked up his first career win today and Marcus Thames crushed his third home run in the last 24 hour as the Yankees squeaked by the Chi Sox, 2-1. Francisco Cervelli picked up a career high four hits. With today’s win, the Yankees finish the road trip with a 3-3 record and become the first team to notch 80 wins this year.

Initial Reaction:

What else can we say about Ivan Nova? In eleven innings as a starter, Nova has only given up three runs while striking out ten. Nova struck out a career-high seven batters today and kept the White Sox hitters off-balance. After this start, Nova will get another shot against the Blue Jays on Friday.

After giving way to four White Sox runs yesterday, the bullpen bounced back, throwing 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. In particular, Joba Chamberlain looked electric in the eighth inning, touching 100 MPH at one point with his fastball. Mo was Mo and notched his 27th save on the season.

Positives From The Game:

Five Homers: Marcus Thames has now homered five times in his last five games. Gotta keep him in the lineup.

4 for 4: Francisco Cervelli had a perfect day at the dish collecting a hit in each of his four plate appearances. He scored the decisive run in the third inning on a Brett Gardner single.

Bullpen: Addressed above, the foursome of Boone Logan, Kerry Wood, Chamberlain, and Rivera were brilliant in preserving the win for Nova.

Negatives From The Game:

What Gives, Jeet?: Derek Jeter turned in an 0 for 4 today, dropping his batting average to .270. Jeter finished the White Sox series off with a 1 for 13.

Austin Leaves Em: Austin Kearns was also 0 for 4, but left five runners on base.

Interesting Facts:

14-2: The Yankees are 14-2 without A-Rod this season. I’d rather have’em than not.

What’s Next?:

The Yanks will come home for a ten-game home stand starting tomorrow night against the Oakland A’s.

Monday, 7:05 PM, YES: Trevor Cahill (14-5, 2.43 ERA) vs. Dustin Moseley (4-2, 4.53 ERA)

Last Start:
Cahill: Win, seven innings, no runs, two strikeouts (at CLE)

**In July, the Yankees defeated Cahill after scoring six runs in six innings. Alex Rodriguez was responsible for five of those six runs and will not play on Monday.
**Cahill is 6-3 with a 3.03 ERA on the road.
