After 46 at-bats through 12 games, Alex Rodriguez finally hit his 600th home run, a first inning two-run blast on a Shawn Marcum 2-0 slider. The specially marked home run ball landed right below the Mohegan Sun restaurant in dead center field, a place where only monuments of Ruth and Gehrig reside. Rodriguez will not need to bargain with fans for the baseball, but he will definitely meet with the Securitas official who retrieved the ball.

Oh yeah, the Yankees salvaged the final game of this three-game set, winning 5-1.

Initial Reaction:

Finally, it feels like a huge relief writing this. The entire A-Rod 600 home run chase was definitely effecting the Yankees, losers of their last three entering today. The Yankees, currently a half game behind the first place Tampa Bay Rays needed this game to avoid their first three game home sweep of the year.

Overshadowed by A-Rod’s homer were the performances by Phil Hughes and Derek Jeter. Hughes threw 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball before giving way to the bullpen. Hughes picked up his 13th win of the season. Hughes gave up 12 earned runs over his last three starts, so today’s performance will give him some confidence before he takes the ball again in Texas.

Derek Jeter went 4 for 4 today and scored three of the Yankees’ five runs. Jeter is only hitting .280 this season, a far cry from his .315 career line. Let’s hope he can carry this hot hitting into the weekend.

Positives From The Game:

600: Goes without saying.

Hot Teix: Mark Teixeira continued his month long dominance today going 2 for 3. Since July 1st, Teixeiera has hit .331 with 10 HRs.

Props to Posada: Jorge Posada took a beating behind the plate today. Posada took multiple foul balls today and was surprisingly still standing in the ninth inning.

Negatives From The Game:

No Berk, No Love: Lance Berkman is just 2 for 15 with the Yankees. With a slew of righty pitchers from Boston coming to town tomorrow, the Yanks need Berkman to have his first Yankee moment..

Cano Slumping?: Even though Robinson Cano snapped his hit-less streak today, he is still just 1 for his last 14. He’s fine though.

Interesting Facts:

3 Years: Exactly three years from today, A-Rod hit his 500th home run.

The Haul: According to Jack Curry of the YES Network, A-Rod and the Yankees were willing to offer the fan who caught the ball:

  • An A-Rod signed hat
  • An A-Rod signed ball
  • An A-Rod signed bat
  • An A-Rod signed jersey

If the fan still didn’t want to give up the ball, the Yankees were ready to offer lunch with Rodriguez and gal-pal, Cameron Diaz.

Too bad no fan caught the ball.

What’s Next?:

Well, they aren’t going here, but the Sawks are coming to town for four starting Friday night!

Friday, 7:05 PM, YES: Clay Buchholz (11-5, 2.79 ERA) vs. Javier Vazquez (9-7, 4.61 ERA)
