The New York Mets were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals 8-7 Wednesday night in 13 innings. On a night when both the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies win, the Mets needed to come up victorious in the extra inning battle. They now fall back 7.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves, and are only one game ahead of the 4th place Florida Marlins. What exactly happened in this wild game?

After struggling to get any offense in the first two games of the series, the New York Yankees exploded for eight runs off of thirteen hits to beat the Cleveland Indians 8-0. A.J. Burnett was dominant in 6.1 innings of work and picked up his second straight victory in which he’s allowed no runs. With the win, the Yankees move to 64-36 on the 100-game-old season.

The New York Mets topped the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 on Tuesday night. After a 2-9 road trip, they start their six-game homestand on a good note. After 100 games played, the Mets are 51-49, only two games over .500, and struggling to keep pace with the hot Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East division.

The recent trend held true as rookie pitcher Josh Tomlin baffled the Yankees for seven innings tonight. Tomlin limited the Yankees to three hits and one run over the first seven frames. The Yankees only run came on a Colin Curtis eighth inning RBI ground out.

The NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement will expire after the 2011 season. With many small-market owners screaming ‘poverty’ and the Player’s Association unwilling to accept lower salary figures, a work stoppage seems like a very real possibility. Who’s to blame though?
