Curtis Granderson’s seventh inning, two-run home run proved to be the difference as the Yankees topped the Indians, 3-2. Javier Vazquez threw seven solid innings of five hit ball to pace the Yanks. Even though Alex Rodriguez did not hit 600th home run tonight, Joe Girardi effectively pieced together the eighth inning, an inning that did not feature Joba Chamberlain.

'Man, Cleveland Does Really Suck'

Initial Reaction:

Cleveland starter, Jake Westbrook effectively worked his way through the Yankee lineup. Westbrook only gave up four Yankee hits over eight innings, but Granderson’s seventh inning two-run home run proved to be a costly mistake. Any team looking for a relatively cheap pitcher, Westbrook will make a solid addition.

Once again, Javier Vazquez had another solid start for the Yankees, scattering five hits over seven innings. The only big blow against Vazquez came via a Travis Hafner second inning solo home run.

The story from this game has to be the eighth inning. For the first time in a long time, Joe Girardi did not opt to use Joba Chamberlain in the eighth inning. With the Yanks holding a 3-2 lead, David Robertson came on and got Asdrubral Cabrera to bounce into a double play. Girardi brought in Boone Logan to get the lefty swinging Shin Soo Choo. Logan blew Choo away with a 97 MPH fastball.

There’s really no need for a Joakim Sora. The price is way, way too high and going forward, I think the Yankees can piece it together.

Positives From The Game:

Grandy Is Dandy: Granderson’s hit his tenth home run tonight, his third in two days. Granderson has not lived up to expectations so far, but his strong start to the second half is promising.

Swish Bomb: Nick Swisher crushed his 18th home run tonight, a fourth inning solo shot. Very quietly, Swisher has amassed 18 HRs, 59 RBIs, and a .301 batting average.

All of the pitchers: From Vazquez to Robertson to Logan to Mariano Rivera, the Yankee pitchers gave up only six hits. Rivera also picked up his 21st save.

Negatives From The Game:

Garza’s No Hitter: For anyone that was scoreboard watching, Rays starter, Matt Garza threw a no-hitter against the Tigers tonight. The Yankees will face him this weekend at the Trop.

Specially Marked Baseballs?: Alike any other Yankee fan, I cannot wait until Alex hits his 600th home run. But I hate these special baseballs that the MLB is using. Obviously no pitcher wants to give up the 600th blast, but giving the pitcher a special ball adds extra motivation. I don’t think Babe Ruth hit any specially marked balls…

Interesting Facts:

500: Nick Swisher scored his 500th run tonight.

43: Mark Teixeira has reached base safely in 43 straight games.

0.96: Mariano Rivera’s ERA this season.

What’s Next?:

The Yankees will send Big C to the mound tomorrow night. The Yanks will face off against pitchers they normally succeed against, those making their major league debuts! (Totally joking)

CC Sabathia (13-3, 3.18 ERA) vs. Carlos Carrasco (Major League Debut)
