R.A. Dickey did his job, giving the Mets a chance to win, but the Mets offense scored only 2 runs, and has now scored 4 runs or less in 11 straight games, an astonishing streak. The pitching for the most part has been exceptional, the bats are awful right now.

Initial Reaction: The Mets lost another game in Arizona, falling to 1-5 on this road trip. They look flat awful right now, and it appears as though the train may be falling off the tracks on this Mets season. The Mets can’t seem to put a solid pitching effort together with a game where they actually score runs. If they plan to keep their playoff hopes alive, they need to start winning games against one of the worst teams in the National League. Coupled with a win by the Braves, the Mets still sit in 2nd place, but are 6.5 games back, as they are fading fast. They’re 3 games behind Cincinatti for the Wild Card lead.

The Positives:

R.A. Dickey: Dickey did his job tonight. He gave up only three runs in seven innings tonight. What more can you ask for from a pitcher who started the season in Triple-A. While has hasn’t won a game since June, he’s still pitched well. In two starts since the All Star break, he’s allowed only 4 runs. Don’t look at the 6-4 record, his ERA is still 2.73.

The Negatives:

Jason Bay: He’s really struggling right now. He grounded into a double play, and finished the night 0-3 with two strikeouts.

This Roadtrip: The Mets struggles could have been expected against a solid San Francisco team where they faced three very good pitchers. Arizona however, is a different story. They are a terrible team, yet the Mets can’t figure out how to win games away from Citi Field. They don’t look the part of a team that wants to play meaningful baseball late into the summer, and past Labor Day.

Interesting Facts:

-The Mets now stand 0-5 in games that Carlos Beltran has played, with their only win on this roadtrip coming on his offday Sunday.

-Jason Bay’s average has fallen to .261, as he continues to struggle.

What’s Next?

The Mets will attempt to salvage another road series, but they’ll face the Ace of the Arizona staff.
