Match-Up: Los Angeles Dodgers (Kershaw) at St. Louis Cardinals (Carpenter)

The Dodgers and Cards will look to open the second half with a bang. Each team will send out its ace to star things off. Dodgers ace, Clayton Kershaw has been great this season, posting a 9-4 record with 128 strikeouts in 112 innings. Kershaw has given up two or fewer runs in nine of his last twelve starts. Kershaw is 2-0 with a 2.27 ERA in five career starts.

The Cardinals will send out struggling ace, Chris Carpenter. Carpenter’s numbers this season are pretty good, 9-3, 3.29 ERA, but he struggled to close out the first half. However, Carpenter has struggled over his last two starts, giving up twelve runs in his last nine innings. Carpenter has been excellent in his career against the Dodgers, posting a 5-0 record with a 1.88 ERA in seven starts.

This is virtually a toss-up pick between two of the NL’s best arms. The Cardinals are 27-15 at home while the Dodgers are 21-21 on the road. I’m picking the home team to start the second half off with a win in a low-scoring affair.

The Pick: St. Louis Cardinals

July Record: 5-8
