Javier Vazquez was masterful for the Yanks today, throwing seven scoreless frames while only allowing three hits. Vazquez departed and the Yankees headed into the bottom of the eighth inning, clinging to a 1-0 lead. Joba Chamberlain came on and it got ugly. After two hits and an intentional walk to Russell Branyan, Jose Lopez crushed a 2-0 fastball over the left field wall, giving the Mariners a 4-1 advantage. That’s pretty much all you need when you have Felix Hernandez cruising on the mound. The Yankees lost the game, 4-1.

Initial Reaction:

I really cannot stress how great Javy Vazquez was tonight. The Mariners recorded their first base-hit in the sixth inning. At one point, Vazquez retired 15 straight hitters. He was effectively mixing in his slider, frequently getting swings out of the zone. He was great.

However, Joba just wasn’t. Mentioned above, he gave up the decisive grand slam in a rather sloppy eighth inning. Before tonight’s debacle, Joba had given up only two runs over his last eight appearances. When facing Felix Hernandez (Complete Game, nine strikeouts), the margin for error is too small to cough it up like Joba did.

Positives From The Game:

Swish-Homer: We found out earlier today that Nick Swisher will compete in Monday’s home run derby. He got some practice today as he crushed a third inning Hernandez fastball over the right field wall.

Javy is Back: During this road trip, Vazquez has only given up one run over 14 innings while striking out nine.

Negatives From The Game:

Felix Hernandez’s Post Game Celebration: Ok, Felix. We know you threw your second complete game against the Yankees. You are one of the best arms in the American League. We get it. No need to jump around like a 16-year-old girl who just got asked to the high school prom after you win the game. Act like you’ve been there before. Is that how a ‘KING’ should act?

Joba Rules: Joba stunk tonight.

Interesting Facts:

RIP 10:10 PM Games: I honestly couldn’t stay up to watch ANOTHER 10:10 Yankee game. We’ve suffered through six of them this week. Thankfully, the Yankees wrap up their final West Coast trip tomorrow at 4:10!!!

What’s Next?:

The Yankees will send Big Poppa out to the hill for the series win.

Sunday, 4:10 PM, YES: CC Sabathia (11-3, 3.19 ERA) vs. Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-8, 5.74 ERA)

Sabathia defeated the Mariners, 4-2 on July 1st. Look for another strong start from Carsten Charles.
