Tonight, LeBron James signed with the Miami Heat. (Expect a solid Matt Vereb article on the issue). Also, Nick Swisher edged out Kevin Youkilis to make the All-Star team. And, oh yeah, there was in fact, a baseball game. The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners 3-1 in the first of four games at Safeco Field. Alex Rodriguez hit a two out, two run single in the top of the ninth for the go-ahead run to give the Yanks the victory.

Andy Pettitte picked up the win for the Yankees to move to 11-2 on the season. Also, Mariano Rivera picked up his 20th save of the year. With the win, the Bombers move to 54-31. They have now won six games in a row.

Initial Reaction:

Both Andy Pettitte and Jason Vargas had great games tonight.

Pettitte: 8 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 9 K, 4 BB
Vargas: 7 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 2 BB

However, only one pitcher could get the win, and that would be Pettitte. Leaving the game after the eighth, Alex Rodriguez hit a huge two-out single to score two runs for the Yankees and give them a 3-1 lead. Other providers of offense tonight were Nick Swisher (4-4, 2 2B, 1 R, 1 BB) and Curtis Granderson (3-4).

Positives From The Game:

What a Gun!: Earlier tonight in a conversation with columnist Kenny Mauss, I described Brett Gardner’s arm as “average”. Well, he proved me wrong in the bottom of the first, gunning out a hustling Ichiro at third base.

Swish: Nick Swisher thanked fans for their votes on Twitter and on the field, going 4-4 with two singles, two doubles, and a walk. He also made a great sliding catch in the bottom of the fifth. To anyone who didn’t think he should make the All-Star team, Swish had a huge response tonight.

Finishing the Inning: After a Chone Figgins ground-out and a Franklin Gutierrez intentional walk, Pettitte struck out Russell Branyan looking on a full count and Jose Lopez on an 0-2 slider in the dirt. Leaving the bases loaded and allowing only one run in the sixth kept the Yankees in the game.

GIDP: Jorge Posada grounded into a 4-3 double play with no outs in the eighth. Why was that good? A-Rod came home to score and tie the game up at 1-1.

Negatives From The Game:

The RBI’s are There for the Taking: The Yankees managed at least one hit in each of the first seven innings, but they were unable to push a run across home plate. A-Rod had left four runners on base before his huge ninth inning single.

Bottom of the Sixth: Andy Pettitte and the Yanks were rolling until consecutive singles by the Mariners led to an Ichiro bunt which was thrown away by Pettitte. This allowed Josh Wilson to score and give the Mariners the first run of the game.

Interesting Facts:

Happy 26th: A Happy 26th Birthday to #26, Kevin Russo.

With his two-out single in the second, Mark Teixeira has now reached base in 29 straight games.

Russell Branyan’s career numbers vs. Pettitte: 0-10, 8 K

What’s Next?:

The Yankees play yet another 10:10 PM game at Safeco Field. Don’t worry fans; this will all be over soon.

Projected Starters:

Phil Hughes (10-2, 3.83 ERA) vs. Cliff Lee (8-3, 2.34 ERA)
