In the final game in Oakland this year for the New York Yankees, A.J. Burnett led the Yanks to a 6-2 win over the Oakland Athletics. This gives the Yankees their first road sweep of the season. With the win, the Yankees move to 53-31 on the season and remain two games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.
It was great to see A.J. Burnett pitch like he finally can. He showed glimpses in his last start, but tonight he finally turned it into a win. The difference? He used his change-up consistently for the first time since spring training. Big thanks to Dave Eiland for reteaching Burnett the pitch. Burnett went seven innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three.
Positives From The Game:
Send Swish!: What are you doing reading this article? Go SEND SWISH to the All-Star game! Nick Swisher went 3-4 with his 14th home run, a walk, and two runs scored. He finished a triple short of the cycle. This guy needs to get on a jet to Anaheim ASAP.
Five in the Fourth: The Yankees poured it on Gio Gonzalez with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. The huge hit was Mark Teixeira’s three-run home run to deep left-center field.
Gio: Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez hasn’t been able to do much against the Yanks this year…

Negatives From The Game:
First Inning: Derek Jeter had a quick ground out, but Nick Swisher, Mark Teixeira, and A-Rod all proceeded to get on base. Could Jorge Posada or Marcus Thames continue the “Year of the Grand Slam”? Nope. Jorge went down looking and Marcus went down swinging. That could have given A.J. a four-run buffer.
Sitting, Waiting, Wishing: Yankee base runners were left sitting on the bases in each of the first three innings. They left six total in those frames, four of which were in scoring position.
With his first inning walk, Mark Teixeira has now reached base in 28 straight games.
Oakland catcher Kurt Suzuki hit a foul ball off the plate and it bounced up into his chin. He shook it off, and continued to play. I don’t care what team you’re on; that’s how you play the game.
This was A.J. Burnett’s first win since May 30th. Way to get back on the even side of .500, Allan.
The Yankees will head up the West Coast to take on the Seattle Mariners. Yes, they have to face Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez, but no, not tomorrow. The game will be on the YES Network at 10:10 PM.
