In roughly twelve hours, we’ll know where LeBron James will be playing basketball next season. There have been endless rumors flying around about him house hunting, having lunch with other players, etc. But let’s just cut through all of the clutter and look at the facts. LeBron values only two things…
While I don’t know him personally, it’s apparent that he only cares about stroking his ego and leaving a lasting legacy on the NBA. Just look at his actions. He wants a one-hour special on ESPN tonight to announce his ‘Decision’. He refuses to tell anyone where he’s going to play. His inner circle is throwing out all kinds of rumors to keep the media off the scent. He wants to become a billion-dollar athlete. In addition to all of this free agency non-sense, he thinks that the No. 23 should be retired throughout the league in order to honor Michael Jordan.
At the end of the day, LeBron wants to be the new-age Michael Jordan. He has won two MVP awards, has taken his team to the NBA Finals, but has yet to win a title for HIS team. HE WANTS to be the man. HE WANTS to take his team to the promise land. He wants the whole world to know who he is. What better place to do that than New York City?
If LeBron James stays true to his egotistical self, he’ll join the Knicks tonight. He can create a legacy in Madison Square Garden with Amar’e Stoudemire. He can start another New York dynasty. He can make more money than he’s ever dreamed of. Hell, he can come to Yankee games whenever he wants.
All of these reasons seem purely logic to me. Why go to Miami when that’s clearly Dwyane Wade’s team? I’ll tell you right now, if LeBron James says he’s going to Miami tonight, the Michael Jordan aspirations immediately come to a halt. It’ll jeopardize his legacy. The same thing goes for the Bulls. Why play in Michael Jordan’s shaddow? Another legacy damager. Cleveland has not done anything to become a better team, so why go back? He’s been there for six seasons already and hasn’t won.
Finally, as a New York sports loyalist, if LeBron James comes to Greenwich, CT tonight to announce that he’s going anywhere other than the Knicks or Nets, I will be pissed. Greenwich is literally 20-30 minutes north of NYC. Why not stay in Akron if he’s re-signing? Just don’t toy with us by coming into our backyard without committing to us.
All we can do now is wait. I honestly have no idea what this guy is going to do. And to be honest, I’m ready for all of it to end. The Knicks seem like a logic choice in ‘LeBron World’, but that World typically doesn’t do logical things…
