There were fireworks at Citi Field tonight before the pyrotechnics show ever took place. Jerry Manuel was tossed in the 5th inning on a questionable reversal by the umpiring crew that changed the entire game. The Mets rallied in the bottom of the inning, but couldn’t take the lead. The Mets are still 2 games behind the Atlanta Braves.

Initial Reaction:

Mike Pelfrey didn’t have his good stuff again tonight, as he opposed Travis Wood. The Mets fell behind in the 1st off the bat of the should-be-all-star Joey Votto, but answered back with three consecutive two out hits in the bottom of the inning. Nobody scored again until the 5th when both the Mike Pelfrey and Travis Wood trains came off their respective tracks. Both pitchers went only 4.2 innings and left the games in the hands of the bullpens. David Wright continues to stay hot but there wasn’t enough to bring the Mets back tonight.

The Positives:

Don’t Quit Attitude: The Mets fell behind 7-1 in the 5th inning, only to come roaring back in the bottom of the 5th, scoring five runs of their own. Even though they didn’t get the W, it was nice to see them keep fighting.

All Star: Another night, and another multi hit game for David Wright. He’s hitting over .410 since May 30th and added two hits tonight, including a triple. He reached base three times and scored twice. His average is .317 on the season.

The Negatives:

Big Pelf: For the 2nd straight start, Mike Pelfrey failed to get out of the 5th inning. The wheels fell off the apple cart tonight after a questionable HBP call and Pelf couldn’t recover. He fell to 10-3 on the season. He’ll have a chance for his 11th win of the season on Saturday.

Interesting Facts:

Jerry was tossed for the 2nd time this season.

The Mets lost only their 3rd series opener at Citi field this year.

New York didn’t have a hit after the 6th inning.
