The battle of New York aces definitely lived up to expectations today. However, one critical Johan Santana mistake proved to be costly as the Yankees topped the Mets 4-0 in the rubber game of this three game set.

Drew Brees Throws Out First Pitch, Hopefully Doesn't Bring Madden Curse Into Stadium; AP

Initial Reaction:

Johan Santana’s only mistake came during the bottom of the fourth inning. After three consecutive Yankee singles by Brett Gardner, Derek Jeter, and Nick Swisher, Mark Teixeira hit a 1-1 change up over the left field wall for a grand slam. This play was the only run producing play of the game.

CC Sabathia gave the Yankees one of his patent dominant performances on this muggy Sunday afternoon. Sabathia threw eight scoreless innings while striking out six. Sabathia finished the eighth inning with 100 total pitches thrown, looking for a complete game, but then Mother Nature showed up and rained for thirty minutes, forcing him out of the game. No big deal when you have Mariano Rivera awaiting in the bullpen.

Positives From The Game:

Swish-A-Licious Bunt?: With runners on first and second with no outs in the fourth inning, Nick Swisher laid a picture-perfect ‘push bunt’ down the first base line. Swisher beat out the bunt, setting the stage for Teixeira…

You’re On The Mark!: After the Swisher bunt, Teixeira’s grand slam proved to be the decisive play in the Yankee win.

Big Man Hitting His Stride: Sabathia has now won his last four starts. During that time span, his ERA has dropped from 4.16 to 3.68.

Negatives From The Game:

Hey A-Rod, Start Hitting!: This is really nit-picking, but Alex swung on a 3-0 count with two on in the fifth. He popped up a fastball down the middle. A-Rod went 0 for 11 against the Mets. The Yanks need his bat…

Interesting Facts:

Down Go The Rays: Since the Rays lost to the Marlins today, the Yankees claimed sole position of first place in the AL East!

21: Mariano Rivera has held opposing hitters to no hits over their last 21 at-bats. The guy is the best, period.

4: The Yankees starting pitchers held the hot-hitting Mets to only four runs over 22 innings.

6: Today’s Grand Slam was Teixeira’s sixth of his career!

What’s Next?:

I absolutely hate West Coast trips. The Yankees play three games in Arizona before setting up the first Torre vs. Yankee match-up this weekend at Dodger Stadium…Take a nap before the games this week.
