Match-Up: Will Stephen Strasburg win his debut?

When Stephen Strasburg makes his debut tonight at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates, expect millions to be watching. Strasburg, the #1 overall draft pick by the Washington Nationals in 2009, has been absolutely dominant in his collegiate and minor league career.

As a student at San Diego State University, Strasburg went 21-4 with 228 strikeouts in only 206 innings during his two full seasons with the club. During his minor league stint this season, Strasburg went 7-2 with a 1.30 ERA, striking out 65 hitters while only walking 13 in 55 innings.

Strasburg will also benefit by facing the worst hitting team in the major leagues. The Pittsburgh Pirates are only hitting .238 as a team and have really struggled against righty pitchers.

Strasburg will face off against Pittsburgh righty, Jeff Karstens. Karstens has been serviceable this year for the Pirates, posting a 1-1 record with a 4.50 ERA. He hasn’t received a decision in his last seven starts, but hasn’t allowed more than four earned runs in any of those games.

I’m picking Stephen Strasburg to win his first start. The build up is crazy for this kid. The Nationals only have ‘standing room’ tickets available to the public. I expect the Nats to score some runs and help his young fireballer get his first win.

The Pick: Strasburg W
