Nine innings was not enough tonight at Citi Field as the Mets and Padres went to extras in a pitcher’s duel that moved quickly through the first nine innings. Ike Davis ended it in the 11th, hitting an absolute bomb to right field.

Initial Reaction:

Mike Pelfrey was exceptional yet again, but his nine innings of dominant pitching was not enough, as the Padres matched his effort forcing the game to extras. The Mets were unable to get it going offensively, but Pelfrey kept them in the game with another stellar performance. Ike Davis ended the game with his 7th home run of the season.

The Positives:

Big Pelf: If Johan Santana is your 1, Mike Pelfrey is the 1a. He remained 8-1 on the season, taking a no decision, but he pitched nine wonderful innings, allowing only one run, giving up five hits and no walks. He struck out six and dropped his ERA to 2.23 through 12 starts. Bobby Jones and Johan Santana are the only other pitchers in Mets HISTORY to have 8 wins in their first 12 starts and have an ERA below 2.5. Tom Seaver, Doc Gooden and Nolan Ryan never did that with the Mets.

Jose Reyes: Reyes’ home run in the 7th tied the game for the Mets. He added another hit and walk as he hopefully put an end to the 1-19 slump he entered the game with.

Ike Davis: He was only 1-5, but his lone hit was the game winner.

The Negatives:

Wright’s Error: David’s 9th inning error allowed Hairston to get to 2nd base and put the winning run in scoring position with only one out. Fortunately it never cost them as Pelfrey got New York out of the jam.

Jason Bay: 0-5, three strikeouts, and a ground out to 3rd in the 10th with Angel Pagan on 3rd representing the winning run. One time brotha.

Interesting Facts:

11: Jeff Francoeur‘s current hit streak. He’s white hot right now.

2.23: Pelfrey’s ERA continues to drop as he’s allowed only two runs in last 16 innings pitched.

9: That’s nine straight wins at home for the Mets (23-9 for the season).

What’s Next?

The Mets look to win the series against the Padres and their 1oth straight at home.
