Match-Up: Colorado Rockies (U. Jimenez) at San Francisco Giants (T. Lincecum)

Talk about a great pitching match-up on Memorial Day. This year’s Cy Young favorite squares off against the the two-time defending Cy Young award winner as the Ubaldo Jimenez takes his 0.88 ERA to AT&T Park.

Jimenez has been absolutely dominant this season. He has a 9-1 record with a 0.93 WHIP to go along with his 0.88 ERA. Jimenez has won three straight starts and has a 5-1 record on the road. In those six starts, Jimenez has only allowed four total runs! In his career against the Giants, Jimenez is an uninspiring 3-4 with a 3.19 ERA in ten career starts. Less impressively, Jiminez is 1-3 at AT&T Park, carrying a 5.14 ERA. He has not faced San Francisco this season.

The Giants will counter with ace, Tim Lincecum. Lincecum is 5-1 on the season with a 3.00 ERA. While these numbers appear to be very good, they are pedestrian for the two-time Cy Young Award winner. That’s directly due to a poor May showing. During May, Lincecum is 1-1 with a 5.53 ERA. Lincecum has only won one of his last five starts and lost his first game last Wednesday to the Nationals. Lincecum has been tagged for eleven earned runs over his last two starts. Some are wondering if Lincecum is injured, but every pitcher goes through tough stretches. He’ll figure it out.

Alike Jimenez, Lincecum has been average at best against the Rockies. He is 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in eleven career starts. He has not faced Colorado this season.

The law of averages suggests that Jimenez’s numbers are bound to drop back down to Earth. While I do think they’ll eventually falter, I don’t think it’ll happen on Memorial Day. The Giants have scored an average of 2.25 runs off ‘Ace pitching’. (Roy Oswalt, Roy Halladay, Adam Wainwright). They’ve enjoyed some great success against mediocre Diamonback pitching this past weekend, but they’ll be in for a dose of reality on Memorial Day. Lincecum is also struggling, something he can’t do if he wants to match up against Jimenez.

The Pick: Colorado Rockies

May Record: 13-17
