In a game where the starting pitcher for the Mets lasted only one batter, the Mets were able to use their bats to lead them to victoy. David Wright’s day off yesterday proved to be effective and New York split the short two game series in Washington.

Initial Reaction:

John Maine started the game, but lasted only one batter. Washington’s starter was Luis Atilano. My hat goes off to Raul Valdez tonight. He took the Mets and put him on his back when they sorely needed it. He came into the game and pitched five great innings, surrendering only one run. This game could have ruined the bullpen for the Mets, with six huge games coming up (3 vs. the hated Yankees followed by 3 vs. the Phillies), but Valdez was “Johnny-on-the-spot” tonight and gave the bullpen a fighting chance going into this weekend.

The Positives:

David Wright: The night off yesterday proved to be helpful for David as he had two fantastic at bats, a bases clearing double in the 1st, and a sacrifice fly in the 5th. More importantly, no strikeouts. Hopefully tonight’s four RBI night gets him going.

Ike Davis: Batting cleanup doesn’t seem to be a problem for the rookie. He was 3-5 with 2 doubles, and his average is up to .289.

Jason Bay: His power still hasn’t arrived, but he’s getting hits. He had three tonight along with two runs scored.

Raul Valdez: What Valdez did tonight does not show up in the box score. After Maine left the game, the bullpen was still responsible to get 27 outs. With each one of them being so very important, Valdez was able to record the first 15 of them, with only 80 pitches. He allowed the bullpen to survive and basically be fully available for the weekend series against the Yankees.

The Negatives:

John Maine: C’mon Man! If you’re hurt, you have to let someone know before getting put into the game. More importantly, this could have major ramifications for the rotation if Niese misses more than one or two starts. Maine will see a doctor tomorrow and a prognosis for his return is expected to be available.

Interesting Facts:

2: The number of double digit run outputs the Mets have produced this season.

10: Rod Barajas‘ current home run total. He leads the team.

3: Number of starting pitchers the Mets lost on this road trip (Perez demotion, Niese’s hamstring, Maine’s precautionary removal)

What’s Next?:

The Mets will welcome the Yankees to Citi Field for the start of a weekend series. Hisanori Takahashi will make his first Major League start, as he opposes Javier Vazquez.

First pitch- 7:05 pm

Probables:

NYM Hisanori Takahashi (3-1) 3.12 ERA vs. NYY Javier Vazquez (2-4) 8.01 ERA
